I bought a Kawasaki bayou 300 & I can't get it to start.?

I purchased a 1988 Kawasaki 300 Bayou & the seller told me it acted like it ran out of gas & would not start back up. The carburetor was gummed up & full of water so I drained & cleaned the tank. I put a rebuild kit in the carburetor & I am getting fire but it still will not start. The battery is dead so I am using the pull start to try & start it but I am just pulling till I just about p out. Did I waist my money or is there something I am missing? Any help would be appreciated.
