Commuting to California state university at Fullerton from Irvine?

I have looked up all the train info about metro and metrolinks but I don't understand exactly... if I get a rail to rail p the only train i can take back to irvine is at 7:04 or so and then the next train is at 9 at night can this be right? what is the best way to navigate the system during the weekdays so i can be at csuf during the week by 10 am and return home at around 715?
